The school's English program has been developed in accordance with VELS and aims to develop students' skills in the three following areas:

  • reading
  • writing
  • speaking & listening
  •

Three periods a week are allocated to English at year 7 level. An enthusiastic and committed team of teachers aims to introduce students to a wide range of reading experiences and writing activities. Students are encouraged to express themselves creatively, analytically and critically both in written form and orally

A particular focus for year 7 is the fostering of good reaxding habits and skills via our reading program ORBIT (Oberon Reads Because It's Terrific). Our school library is a great resource supporting this program with an extensive range of adolescent fiction and expertise in childreen's literature. In 2006 students were encouraged to participate in the Victorian Prmiers Reading Challange and the OHS Readers Cup.

English staff, the Special Needs Co-ordinator and the Student Resource Centre are well equipped to cater for those students who require additional assistance to develop their reading, comprehension and writing skills. Those students are offered intensive individual support in year 7. Further assistance is available to individuals as they progress into the senior school.

    Beyond Year 7

In year 8 skills developed in year 7 are extended. Year 9 and 10 students have the opportunity to select from a range of English subjects catering for their individual abilities and interests. Students are en ouraged to undertake additional English classes at this level.

    Extra Curricula Activities

The school has an extensive and extremely successful public speaking and debating program. Students are encouraged to participate in school, region and state based public speaking competitions. Special focus is given to creative writing. Students are also encouraged to enter a wide range of writing competitions.

Throughout the year there are opportunities to hear a variety of speakers, such as authors and poets. In 2006 our year 7 students enjoyed listeing to Felice Arena, popular author of the Specky Magee novels.
