The mathmatics program has 2 fundamental aims:

  • To give all students a sound understanding of the basic arithmetic and mathematics they will need in order to cope in today's technological society.
    • To provide students with the background knowledge to enable them to pursue tertiary mathematical studies, or to enter other fields of study requiring secondary schools mathematics.
To achieve these aims we offer a comprehensive mathematics program to all students. The year 7 course is intended to foster interest in mathematics with the classroom teacher providing remedial and extension work where necessary.

    Beyond Year 7

In years 8, 9 and 10 most students follow the main course, as developed by Oberon staff, which has been adopted in accordance with state-wide requirements. The opportunity exists for remedial assistance where needed, with a specialist teacher working with small groups of students. At year 9 and 10 students elect from a range of semester long courses depending on their ability, interest and future plans in the studey of Mathematics. There is also an opportunity for students to access VCE units of work.

    VCE

VCE courses on offer includfe Foundation Mathematics, Further Mathematics, General Mathematics: Standard and Advanced, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. It is possible for students to cover Units 1 and 2 from General Mathematics during their year 10 studies. Ninety-five percent of our students select between one and four units - each of a semester's length during year 11. A maximum of four units can then be taken during year 12.

    Extra Curricula Activities

Studens of all levels are encouraged to participate in extra-curricula activities of mathamatical nature such as Australian Mathematics Competitions, the Maths Talent Quest, Deakin University Quiz (for year 10 students), and the Math Challenge for Young Australians.
