The House System

 Year 11 and 12

Vertical Home Groups

The school has a vertical system of student management for students from years 7 to 10.  There are four houses - Cameron, Greeves, Lipson and Thomson each with aprroximately 250 students ranging in age fromm 11 to 16 years.

Each House has its own House Leader and, for most subjects, its own teachers.  This form of organisation offers good opportunities for contact between teachers of each house and their students.  It provides students with a sense of belonging and enables house teachers to deal with discipline and social problems more effectively.  Staffing in areas such as Language other than English, Art/Craft and Physical Education may require that these teachers work across all Houses.

Year 7 classes are timetabled to to ensure one or two teachers have a significant role with a class.  This allows staff and students to quickly settle into secondary life.  These teachers are able to recognise the range of abilities and the differing styles of students and cater for their particular learning needs

Students remain as members of a House for inter-house sport in the senior years but a horizontal structure is used for years 11 and 12 with a Year Level Coordinator for each year. The Year Level Y Coordinator is the major point of contact for any matters relating to welfare/discipline and has the important task of overseeing students as they study for their VCE. There is also a VCE Coordinator who will act as an additional person who can provide assistance to students and teachers. In 2004 VCAL was introduced as part of our year 11 and 12 program, and is to be managed by a team of teachers guiding students to meet their individual needs.

If parents have any concerns about any aspect of their child’s progress, behaviour or well being they should have no hesitation in contacting the relevant House Leader or Year-Level Coordinator. Parents are welcome to contact either the Principal, an Assistant Principal, Student Welfare Manager or the Chaplain.
All young people need care and support as they grow towards adulthood. Students learn best in a safe, supportive and caring environment. Schools are responsible for providing an environment that encourages the social, emotional and educational development of their students.

Vertical Home Group is the core of the house structure with 14 home groups in each house. Introduced to enhance the school's established student welfare, support and management system, each Home Group is composed of students from years 7 to 12. Students remain in the home group for their school life at Oberon, and where practicable, the teacher stays with the group.

In 2007 the group usually meets three times a week and students have the opportunity to become involved in a range of activities. This pastoral care program aims to provide students with continuity of care, an opportunity to improve school connectedness and develop skills essential for success at school, work, in their personal lives and in the community.
